    Blepharoplasty Aftercare: Do’s and Don’ts

Blepharoplasty Aftercare: Do’s and Don’tsProper aftercare plays a critical role in how well you heal after eyelid surgery and how refined your final results look. Following postoperative instructions carefully helps reduce swelling, minimize scarring, and support a smooth recovery. At Khan Eyelid & Facial Aesthetics in Plano, Texas, board-certified oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Tanya Khan offers eyelid surgery.

    Do Follow All Postoperative Instructions

Your surgeon’s aftercare guidelines are designed specifically for your procedure. These instructions may include how to clean the incision area, when to apply ointment, and how often to use cold compresses.

    Do Keep Your Head Elevated

Sleeping with your head elevated helps reduce swelling and promotes circulation. Using extra pillows or a recliner during the first few nights can make a noticeable difference.

Do Use Cold Compresses as Directed

Cold compresses help control swelling and bruising during the first several days. Use them gently and avoid applying pressure directly to the eyelids.

Do Protect Your Eyes From Sun Exposure

The eyelid skin is especially sensitive during healing. Wearing sunglasses and avoiding direct sun exposure helps prevent pigmentation changes and supports better scar healing.

Don’t Rub or Pull on Your Eyelids

Even if the area feels itchy or tight, rubbing can disrupt healing and irritate incisions. If discomfort occurs, contact your surgeon for guidance.

    Don’t Resume Exercise Too Soon

Strenuous activity increases blood flow and can worsen swelling or cause bleeding. Avoid intense exercise, heavy lifting, and bending for the recommended period.

Don’t Wear Eye Makeup Until Approved

Eye makeup should be avoided until incisions have healed and your surgeon confirms it is safe. Introducing makeup too early can increase infection risk.

    Supporting Long-Term Results

Healing continues for weeks after surgery. Attending follow-up appointments and communicating any concerns ensures issues are addressed early and results continue to improve.
