Are Stitches Removed After Eyelid Surgery? What to Expect

Are Stitches Removed After Eyelid Surgery? What to Expect

Are Stitches Removed After Eyelid Surgery? What to ExpectMany patients preparing for eyelid surgery wonder whether stitches are used and if they need to be removed. The answer depends on the surgical technique and the type of sutures used. Understanding what to expect can ease anxiety and help you feel prepared for recovery. At Khan Eyelid & Facial Aesthetics in Plano, Texas, board-certified oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Tanya Khan offers eyelid surgery.

Why Stitches Are Used in Eyelid Surgery

Stitches help close the incision precisely so the eyelid heals smoothly and scars remain discreet. Incisions are typically placed within natural eyelid creases or along the lash line to minimize visibility once healed.

    Types of Stitches Used

Surgeons may use either dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures.

    Dissolvable Stitches

These stitches gradually break down on their own and do not need to be removed. They are often used on the inside of the eyelid or in cases where minimal external support is needed.

    Non-Dissolvable Stitches

These stitches require removal, usually within five to seven days after surgery. Removal is quick and typically causes minimal discomfort.

Your surgeon will explain which type is used during your procedure.

    What Stitch Removal Is Like

If stitches need to be removed, the process is brief and performed in the office. Most patients describe it as mildly uncomfortable at most. There is no need for anesthesia, and normal activities can be resumed immediately afterward unless otherwise directed.

    Caring for Incisions and Stitches

Proper aftercare is essential. Patients are usually instructed to keep the area clean, apply prescribed ointment, and avoid rubbing or pulling on the eyelids. Following instructions helps reduce irritation and supports clean healing.

    How Stitches Affect Scarring

Whether stitches dissolve or are removed, scars typically fade very well over time. Because eyelid skin is thin and heals efficiently, incision lines often become barely noticeable once healing is complete.

When to Return to Work and Normal Activities After Eyelid Surgery

When to Return to Work and Normal Activities After Eyelid SurgeryOne of the most common questions patients ask before eyelid surgery is how much downtime to expect. Blepharoplasty is known for delivering noticeable rejuvenation with relatively manageable recovery, but healing still occurs in stages. Understanding when you can safely return to work and daily activities helps you plan ahead and feel confident throughout recovery. At Khan Eyelid & Facial Aesthetics in Plano, Texas, board-certified oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Tanya Khan offers eyelid surgery.

The First Few Days After Eyelid Surgery

Immediately after surgery, swelling, bruising, and mild tightness around the eyes are normal. Most patients spend the first two to three days resting at home with their head elevated and using cold compresses as directed. Vision may feel slightly blurry due to ointment use or swelling, but this is temporary.

During this early phase, it is best to avoid work, driving, and prolonged screen time.

    Returning to Work

Many patients feel comfortable returning to desk work or non-physical jobs within five to seven days. By this time, swelling and bruising are improving and often easy to conceal with glasses or light makeup if approved by your surgeon.

If your job involves physical labor, heavy lifting, or frequent bending, you may need additional time off. Your surgeon will provide guidance based on the extent of your procedure and your healing progress.

    Resuming Normal Daily Activities

Light activities such as walking can usually be resumed within a few days. More strenuous exercise, including running, weightlifting, yoga, and high-impact workouts, should be avoided for at least two to three weeks. These activities increase blood pressure and can worsen swelling or increase the risk of bleeding.

Driving is typically safe once vision is clear, you are no longer taking prescription pain medication, and you feel comfortable turning your head.

    Social Activities and Public Appearances

Most patients feel socially presentable within one to two weeks. Bruising may last longer in some individuals, but it continues to fade steadily. Final results continue to refine over several weeks as residual swelling resolves.

    Following Your Surgeon’s Guidance

Every patient heals differently. Following postoperative instructions closely helps ensure a smooth recovery and the best aesthetic outcome. Your surgeon will let you know when it is safe to return to work and activities based on your individual healing timeline.
